This programme draws a richly contrasted line through the Tcherepnin family’s musical world: Nikolay’s finely shaded, theatre-bred imagination and Alexander’s restless search for a personal language shaped by rhythm, folklore, and cosmopolitan modernism. At its centre lies Alexander’s early Violin Sonata in C minor—recently discovered in the Paul Sacher Foundation and prepared for performance by Giorgio Koukl—its taut argument and climactic sweep moving from dark, “Russian” introspection to bright bravura. The compact Arabesque distils his neo-classical clarity, while the Piano Trio pulses with crisp metre and an insinuating warmth that edges toward sharper, Shostakovich-like shadows. The later Trio Concertante, re-cast from his evolving “Triple Concerto,” balances march-like energy with rhapsodic stillness and a finale touched by Georgian folk-song echoes. In Nikolay’s Cadence fantastique, time seems to drift between dream and delirium, complemented by affectionate pastoral miniatures and a dacha vignette of salon twilight. Throughout, the performers favour poised phrasing and vivid colour, letting these rare works speak with both elegance and bite.
