Vatroslav Lisinski (1819–1854) is celebrated as the father of Croatian opera, orchestral music, art song and choral music, yet his songs on German texts have remained little known until now. Composed largely in 1846, when the young composer was caught up in the Illyrian movement of Croatia's national revival, they speak the language of early Romanticism and share a recurring theme: transience and the loss of love, home, health and happiness. From the through-composed drama of Die Botschaft to a 'refuge' that echoes Schubert's Erlkönig, the eighteen songs trace a deeply expressive emotional world. In this world-premiere recording, baritone Krešimir Stražanac and pianist Krešimir Starčević give these rediscovered miniatures their due.
