"Beethoven Extended": Symphony No. 7
Catalog Number: 902418DI2
Laurence Equilbey revives the lost art of the double orchestra, joining her Insula orchestra and Insula camerata for a Beethoven Seventh on a festival scale — the massed sound, sometimes more than a hundred players, that Beethoven himself had in mind.
For this instalment of its "Beethoven Extended" series, Harmonia Mundi captures Laurence Equilbey conducting the Seventh Symphony with an unusual weight of numbers. By combining her Insula orchestra with the Insula camerata, she recreates the double-orchestra tradition Beethoven knew well — the composer wrote with the great festival occasions in mind, at which players could be mustered in their hundreds. The effect restores to this most rhythmically charged of the symphonies the sheer physical scale its earliest audiences might have felt, driving its dance-like momentum with exceptional force and clarity.
