Each year from 1684 to 1686, Marc-Antoine Charpentier offered a Christmas pastorale to his patron, Marie de Lorraine. After the death of the boy Louis-Joseph, the last male heir of the line, the figure of the Christ-Child occupied a central place in the devotions of the Guise family. The pastorales and antiphons written in this context and recorded here are at the intersection of the sacred and secular genres, of the popular and the learned. They evoke the mystery of birth with a profoundly moving blend of naïveté and gravity.
Noëls en état de grâce
De 1684 à 1686, Marc-Antoine Charpentier offrit chaque année une pastorale de Noël à sa protectrice, Marie de Lorraine. Avec la mort du petit Louis-Joseph, dernier héritier de la lignée, la figure de l’Enfant Jésus allait prendre une place centrale dans les dévotions des Guise. Nées de ce contexte, les pastorales et antiennes de ce programme sont à la croisée des genres profane et sacré du populaire et du savant. Le mystère de la naissance y est évoqué avec un mélange de naïveté et de gravité qui émeut profondément.

In den Jahren 1684 bis 1686 widmete Marc-Antoine Charpentier alljährlich seiner Gönnerin Maria von Lothringen eine Weihnachtspastorale. Mit dem Tod des kleinen Louis-Joseph, des letzten Erben der Linie, rückte das Jesuskind ins Zentrum frommer Andacht des Hauses Guise. Die vor diesem Hintergrund entstandenen Pastoralen und Antiphonen dieses Programms sind eine Synthese weltlicher und geistlicher, volkstümlicher und gelehrter Musik. Das Geheimnis der Geburt Christi wird darin mit einer tief bewegenden Mischung von schlichter Natürlichkeit und feierlichem Ernst behandelt.
