The cycle of 125 variations that Costanzo Festa composed on the 37-note cantus firmus ‘La Spagna’ is conceived on a scale unique during the Renaissance, and may justly be described as a compositional tour de force. Comparisons with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations are inevitable. This CD offers a first recording of thirty-two of the variations in instrumental performances using two differently constituted ensembles.
La série des 125 variations qu’écrivit Costanzo Festa sur le cantus firmus de 37 notes dit “La Spagna”, est une œuvre unique dans ses dimensions pendant la Renaissance, et constitue sans aucun doute un tour de force de composition. La comparaison avec les Variations Goldberg de Jean Sébastien Bach s’impose. Ce premier enregistrement mondial présente trente-deux variations dans une interprétation instrumentale faisant alterner deux formations différemment constituées.
