This album presents Handel’s dramatic oratorio Belshazzar, performed by Les Arts Florissants under the direction of William Christie. Composed in 1744 and premiered in 1745 at London’s King’s Theatre, Belshazzar tells the story of the Babylonian king's fall, as prophesied by Daniel and brought about by the Persian prince Cyrus. The libretto by Charles Jennens draws on the biblical Book of Daniel, as well as historical accounts from Herodotus and Xenophon, expanding the dramatic context of the feast and the mysterious writing on the wall.
The performance features a distinguished cast including Allan Clayton as Belshazzar, Rosemary Joshua as Nitocris, Caitlin Hulcup as Cyrus, Iestyn Davies as Daniel, and Jonathan Lemalu as Gobrias. The oratorio combines vivid choral writing with richly expressive arias and recitatives that portray themes of divine justice, human pride, and prophetic revelation. This recording includes some of Handel’s 1751 revisions, adding further depth to one of his most theatrically potent oratorios.
