Handel: Messiah
Catalog Number: 90542829DI
The Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists return to Handel's Messiah under Christophe Rousset, with a fine solo team led by Dame Sarah Connolly – a vivid, warm-hearted live account recorded at St Martin-in-the-Fields in December 2025.
Familiar as it is today, Messiah struck its first audiences as startlingly original: an English oratorio on Christian redemption, compiled by Handel's friend Charles Jennens from Bible texts most listeners had known since childhood. Its overriding message is comfort – the very first word sung – and Handel conveys it through an extraordinary range of moods, vivid Old Testament imagery and a greater proportion of choruses than in any of his other oratorios. Here Christophe Rousset, founder of Les Talens Lyriques, directs the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists, the ensembles founded by Sir John Eliot Gardiner. The soloists are soprano Ana Vieira Leite, mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly, tenor Andrew Staples and bass William Thomas. Recorded live (with patches) at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, in December 2025, and accompanied by an essay by Handel scholar Ruth Smith.
