Even in his English oratorios, Handel could not do without the Italian castrati — and when stars such as Senesino, Carestini and Guadagni joined his London companies, he transposed, translated and rewrote arias to suit their extraordinary voices. Countertenor Carlo Vistoli, joined by soprano Giulia Semenzato, explores this fascinating cross-cultural repertoire drawn from Esther, Deborah, Saul, Belshazzar, Theodora, Messiah and Athalia — several heard here in world première recordings of their Italian versions. Emmanuelle Haïm directs Le Concert d'Astrée, with the Concerto Grosso Op. 6 No. 10 framing the programme. It is a vivid portrait of the singers who shaped some of Handel's greatest music.
