La Traversière (Airs et Songes)
Catalog Number: 915425DI
For her first album devoted to the flute, Gabrielle Rubio pays homage to the founders of the French transverse flute – La Barre, Hotteterre and Boismortier – whose singing, richly ornamented style gave the instrument its voice at the court of Louis XIV.
For her first recording devoted to the flute, Gabrielle Rubio pays homage to the founders of the French transverse flute tradition. Between the reign of Louis XIV and the mid-eighteenth century, composers such as Michel de La Barre, Jacques-Martin Hotteterre 'le Romain', Pierre Danican Philidor and Joseph Bodin de Boismortier gave the instrument its own voice – a singing, richly ornamented style directly inspired by the human voice. Rubio is joined by Lukas Schneider, Thibaut Roussel and Cécile Chartrain in a programme that also features François Couperin in an arrangement by the flautist Michel Blavet. Elegant, intimate and expressive, this is the sound of the flute as it came of age in the salons and at the court of France.
