Rising violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte joins William Christie, at the harpsichord and organ, for an imaginative recital celebrating Rameau's own gifts as a violinist. Violin and keyboard vie in invention across a programme drawn largely from Rameau's operas – Les Fêtes d'Hébé, Castor et Pollux, Les Indes galantes, Hippolyte et Aricie and Dardanus – reimagined between theatre, dance and song. Around them the album gathers rarely heard music by eighteenth-century French violinist-composers such as Jacques Aubert, André-Joseph Exaudet, Jean-Baptiste Cupis and Charles-Antoine Branche. The result is a sparkling portrait of the French Baroque violin in the orbit of one of its greatest theatrical imaginations.
