Leipzig Club imagines Johann Sebastian Bach dropping in on a club where classical repertoire, jazz, improvisation and contemporary music all have their place. Accordionist Vincent Peirani and cellist François Salque – partners on stage for some twenty years – build the programme around the Leipzig Cantor and surround him with kindred spirits: Villa-Lobos, whose Bachianas Brasileiras famously fused Bach with Brazilian music; Mendelssohn, who led the 19th-century revival of Bach's music; jazz pianist Brad Mehldau; and the Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks, alongside pieces by Samuel Strouk and Vincent Lê Quang. The unusual pairing of accordion and cello moves easily between written music and improvisation, from intimate lyricism to dazzling virtuosity. The result is a poetic and playful dialogue across three centuries.
