Kristian Bezuidenhout and the Freiburger Barockorchester, led by concertmaster Cecilia Bernardini, present three Mozart concertos on a fortepiano modelled on a Walter & Sohn instrument of around 1805. The Concerto No. 5 in D major, K. 175, composed in Salzburg in 1773, was Mozart's first original concerto for keyboard and orchestra, and one in which the orchestra becomes a true partner to the soloist. The Concerto No. 14 in E-flat major, K. 449, shows a composer at the height of his powers, delighting both amateurs and connoisseurs with its daring and brilliance. The Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466, completed in Vienna in 1785, was Mozart's first piano concerto in a minor key – a dramatic, almost tragic work that points ahead to Don Giovanni and to Romanticism, and one Beethoven admired so much that he performed it with his own cadenzas. The recording uses cadenzas by Robert Levin in K. 466 and by Malcolm Bilson in the finale of K. 175.
