The eight Novelletten, Op. 21 unfold as a sequence of imaginative musical stories, while the Kreisleriana, Op. 16 — inspired by an E. T. A. Hoffmann character and secretly addressed to Clara Wieck — swings between wild exaltation and tender reverie.
