Missy Mazzoli: Breaking the Waves
Catalog Number: HGO0003-D
The premiere recording of Missy Mazzoli's shattering opera after Lars von Trier's film. Lauren Snouffer is Bess, the devout young Scot whose love and faith are tested to unbearable extremes, with Houston Grand Opera under Patrick Summers.
Missy Mazzoli's Breaking the Waves, with a libretto by Royce Vavrek after Lars von Trier's 1996 film, has been hailed as one of the most powerful American operas of recent years. Set on the Isle of Skye in the 1970s, it follows Bess McNeill, a fragile young woman whose devotion to her injured husband Jan collides catastrophically with the rigid Calvinist community around her. This live recording captures Houston Grand Opera's 2025 production, with soprano Lauren Snouffer in the punishing central role and bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as Jan, alongside Michelle Bradley, David Portillo and Michael Mayes. Patrick Summers conducts the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra and Chorus in Mazzoli's raw, luminous score, scored for an ensemble that reaches from electric guitar to melodica. Spanning three acts across two discs, it is the first complete recording of a work that has established Mazzoli among the leading operatic voices of her generation.
