After the Dance is Josu de Solaun’s deeply personal journey through Frédéric Chopin’s complete Mazurkas: a body of music that accompanied the composer throughout his creative life and that De Solaun himself has inhabited for decades.
Far more than a collection of exquisite miniatures, Chopin’s Mazurkas form an extraordinary musical diary. Rooted in Polish dance yet transformed into an intensely private language, they trace an inner landscape of memory, exile, tenderness, fragility, joy and loss. Across these remarkably concentrated works, familiar rhythms continually return altered by experience, as though Chopin were revisiting the same places while becoming a different man.
For De Solaun, the Mazurkas are not music encountered from a distance, but lifelong companions. He has carried them from country to country and piano to piano, through different stages of his own life. His interpretation approaches the cycle not as a monument to be preserved, but as something living: music in which time breathes, hesitates and remembers.
The title After the Dance captures the essence of this vision. These works do not merely celebrate the dance; they preserve its echo — what remains when movement has ceased, when memory transforms experience and silence itself seems to continue the music.
This major new solo project also marks the continuation of De Solaun’s acclaimed collaboration with IBS Classical following Haydn: Piano Sonatas (2022), a recording that earned him the 2023 International Classical Music Award (ICMA) for Instrumental Soloist.
Presented here as a complete journey, including the posthumous Mazurkas and an appendix of alternative and disputed material, After the Dance reveals Chopin’s Mazurkas as one of the most intimate and profound autobiographical landscapes in the piano repertoire — entrusted to an artist whose previous solo recording for IBS Classical received one of classical music’s most prestigious international distinctions.
