Conceived for narrator, soloists and orchestra, the work transforms some of the most iconic episodes from Don Quixote of La Mancha into a sweeping symphonic narrative in which music and the spoken word unfold as one. From the birth of the knight-errant and his devotion to Dulcinea to the arrival of Sancho Panza, the battle with the windmills, the discourse on the Golden Age, the adventures in the Sierra Morena, the encounter with the lions and Sancho’s governorship of the Island of Barataria, the score traverses the Quixotic universe through humour, fantasy, lyricism, action and melancholy. The journey culminates in Don Quixote’s defeat by the Knight of the White Moon, his return to La Mancha and the moving final moments of Alonso Quijano. Díez Boscovich’s music reveals a rich, expressive and deeply narrative orchestral language, while also drawing on elements of the Spanish musical tradition. The unmistakable voice of Camilo García, a narrator of extraordinary dramatic presence, guides the listener through the adventures, dreams and disillusionments of the Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance.
