Elementuak: Accordion Duo Transcriptions
Catalog Number: IBS22026
Elementuak (“Elements”): Expressio Duo (Maria Zubimendi, Garazi Navas) reimagines 3 centuries—Lully/Rameau, Rebel’s Les Élémens, and Basque works by Aita Donostia & Guridi—into vivid, orchestral two-accordion dialogues.
ELEMENTUAK – Expressio Duo
With Elementuak (“Elements”), Expressio Duo presents a compelling exploration of transcription as creative transformation. Accordionists Maria Zubimendi and Garazi Navas take listeners on a journey across three centuries of music, reimagining orchestral and theatrical masterpieces through the richly expressive medium of two accordions.
The album unfolds in three distinct yet interconnected landscapes. It begins in the refined world of the French Baroque, with music by Jean-Baptiste Lully and Jean-Philippe Rameau. In these works — drawn from courtly opera and keyboard repertoire — the duo preserves the ceremonial elegance, intricate ornamentation and structural clarity of the originals, while infusing them with a new breath and immediacy. The interplay of the two instruments allows for striking dialogue, luminous textures and subtle dynamic nuance, revealing fresh perspectives on familiar repertoire.
The journey continues with Jean-Féry Rebel’s visionary Les Élémens. Its famous opening, Le Cahos, with its bold dissonant cluster symbolising primordial disorder, takes on a visceral, almost contemporary force in this transcription. Through layered registers, harmonic tension and dense sonorities, Expressio Duo highlights the work’s astonishing modernity, bridging the aesthetic gap between the 18th century and the sound world of the 20th.
The final section turns toward the Basque musical heritage with works by Aita Donostia and Jesús Guridi. Here, dance rhythms, impressionistic harmonies and folk-inspired melodies are transformed into intimate yet powerfully resonant statements. From the delicate atmospheres of Acuarelas Vascas to the vibrant theatricality of excerpts from El Caserío and Amaya, the accordion becomes both storyteller and orchestra, capturing the colour and emotional depth of these scores with remarkable virtuosity.
Far more than a collection of arrangements, Elementuak is a meditation on the accordion itself — an instrument of air, body and breath — acting as mediator between eras, styles and cultural identities. Rather than imitating the originals, Expressio Duo engages them in dialogue, uncovering hidden expressive dimensions and offering a bold, contemporary voice rooted in tradition.
An album where courtly dances, elemental forces and Basque memory converge in a vivid and deeply personal musical statement.
