Printemps à Varsovie traces a fascinating journey through Polish music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, exploring the dialogue between national identity, folklore and the major European artistic currents of the time. Flautist Gala Kossakowski and pianist Luis Arias bring together works by Witold Lutosławski, Wojciech Kilar, Andrzej Panufnik, Alexandre Tansman, Mieczysław Weinberg and Aleksandra Chmielewska.
At the heart of the programme lies the encounter between Polish musical traditions and the colour, clarity and elegance of French neoclassicism. Tansman’s Sonatine combines Parisian esprit with echoes of Polish dances and folk melodies, while Panufnik’s Hommage à Chopin draws directly on the folklore of Mazovia. Kilar and Lutosławski reveal different facets of post-war Polish music, from neoclassical forms to impressionistic colour, while Weinberg’s Twelve Miniatures, Op. 29, unfold as a kaleidoscope of intimate and contrasting scenes.
The journey reaches the present with Aleksandra Chmielewska’s Mohawk Tale, where storytelling and oral tradition become the starting point for a new musical imagination.
Across changing historical circumstances—from exile and war to Socialist Realism and artistic freedom—Printemps à Varsovie reveals Polish music as a continuous search for identity: a tradition constantly remembered, transformed and reinvented.
