What is particularly fascinating about the wedding cantata BWV 195, "Dem Gerechten muss das Licht" (For the righteous must the light), is the choral passages, in terms of the scope and complexity of the composition and the depth of its message. The rich instrumentation plays a major part in transforming the work into a feast of sound without equal. Yet the attentive listener will also notice the solo pieces, composed in a thoroughly gallant style – in parts, as if Haydn were at work. BWV 195 was apparently performed quite frequently during Bach’s lifetime and underwent many changes; the first version dates from 1728 or 1731, the last from 1749, when the Thomaskantor was working on the Mass in B minor. If we are not mistaken, Johann Sebastian took great pleasure and enjoyment in his wedding cantatas.
