BWV 149 «Man singet mit Freuden vom Sieg» (They sing now of triumph with joy): We may find it difficult today to relate to the figure of Archangel Michael – yet this cantata vividly reveals the significance once attached to the Feast of St Michael. The festive opening chorus, resplendent with trumpet fanfares, the arias that alternate between exultation and quiet trust, the rousing duet “Seid wachsam, ihr heiligen Engel” (“Be watchful, you holy angels”), and a well-known chorale presented in an unexpected light all combine to make this work a true gem among Bach’s cantatas.
