“Sounds familiar!” exclaim most listeners upon hearing the opening Sinfonia of cantata BWV 52. And indeed: the setting is an early version of the first movement of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 1, with its wonderful writing for natural horns. In this cantata for solo soprano, there is more great wind writing to enjoy, with a bassoon and three virtuoso oboes added to the score.
