A musical journey through the sun-drenched Pyrenees. Wilhem Latchoumia weaves Séverac's evocative Cerdaña together with Mompou's intimate Canciones y Danzas and music by Albéniz, in a program inspired by Jankélévitch's essay La Présence lointaine.
After exploring the music of Ginastera, Villa-Lobos and Falla, French pianist Wilhem Latchoumia turns to the borderlands of France and Spain. At the heart of the album is Déodat de Séverac's suite Cerdaña, whose five movements are inspired by places in the Pyrenees, from the mule drivers praying before the Christ of Llívia to their return home. Latchoumia interleaves them with Federico Mompou's Canciones y Danzas and Scènes d'enfants, creating a journey back and forth across the Catalan border. The program closes with Isaac Albéniz – Séverac's teacher at the Schola Cantorum – and his Navarra, which Séverac completed after Albéniz's death. The three composers were brought together by the philosopher Vladimir Jankélévitch in La Présence lointaine, which celebrated their shared art of colour, resonance and the ineffable.
