With Passage, her debut solo album, the Georgian pianist Salomé Jordania (b. 1996) charts a spiritual and vertiginous journey through the music of Franz Liszt, Alexander Scriabin and Kaija Saariaho. Conceived as a single, unbroken arc, the programme moves between mysticism, darkness and the quest for transcendence, exploring both the shadow and the radiance of the human soul. Liszt frames the album — from the tolling Cloches de Genève and the luminous Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude to the towering Sonata in B minor at its summit — while Scriabin contributes the diabolical Poème satanique and the hallucinatory Ninth Sonata, the “Black Mass”. At the album’s still centre lies Saariaho’s Prélude for solo piano, a moment of cosmic suspension that opens onto the unknown. Trained at Juilliard, Yale and London’s Guildhall School, Jordania brings rare intensity and a broad expressive palette to a programme poised between light and darkness, love and fear.
