Where the Light Breaks began with an invitation to record at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts in Kingston, Ontario, and grew into a programme that the Canadian Chamber Orchestra likens to a stained-glass window, each piece a pane opening onto a different emotional world. George Walker's Lyric for Strings – originally a quartet movement written in memory of his grandmother, who escaped slavery – speaks of grief and memory, while Dinuk Wijeratne's Gajaga Vannama reimagines a traditional Sri Lankan melody and Kandyan dance form. Jocelyn Morlock's Solace offers consolation, Kevin Lau's Joy moves between happiness and melancholy, and Osvaldo Golijov's Last Round evokes struggle, loss and celebration. Joined by the Rolston String Quartet, the orchestra closes the album with the sheer energy of Elgar's Introduction and Allegro.
