Written within a decade of each other, Bartók's two great ballet scores chart his journey from the lush colours of late Romanticism to a leaner, fiercely rhythmic modern style. The Wooden Prince, a fairy-tale ballet heard here as a sequence of prelude, seven dances and postlude, still glows with orchestral opulence, while the suite from The Miraculous Mandarin unleashes the brutal energy that made the work one of the great scandals of its time. Edward Gardner conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra in live performances from the Royal Festival Hall – his tenth recording for the LPO Label.
