Winter Words, his poignant Hardy song cycle, appears in a new orchestration by Robin Holloway—this is the world premiere recording. A second premiere comes in the form of Gardner’s own orchestral suite from The Prince of the Pagodas, fulfilling Britten’s unrealised wish for a concert version of his ballet. Part of the LPO’s 20th anniversary celebrations, this album follows Gardner’s acclaimed releases of Rachmaninov’s The Bells and symphonies by Dvořák and Schumann.
