Janáček: The Excursions of Mr Brouček
Leoš Janáček's The Excursions of Mr Brouček (1908–1917) is his strangest and most inventive stage work: an opera in two parts in which Matěj Brouček — a Prague landlord whose horizons stop at beer and sausages — is carried off, drunk, first to an ethereal Moon peopled by precious artists, then back to fifteenth-century Prague and the Hussite wars. Recorded live at the Barbican Hall in May 2025, Sir Simon Rattle leads the London Symphony Orchestra in Janáček's kaleidoscopic score, with Peter Hoare in the title role alongside Lucy Crowe, Aleš Briscein, Gyula Orendt and Lukáš Zeman. By turns comic, lyrical and biting, it is a portrait of complacency confronted by beauty and by history.
