Sinner, Don't Let This Harvest Pass
Catalog Number: MEX_77145
Rising pianist Joseph Havlat pairs Schumann's Geistervariationen with responses by Michael Finnissy and Cassandra Miller - including their rare co-composition on an Afro-American spiritual - in a ground-breaking programme woven together by transcription.
On Metier Records, pianist Joseph Havlat presents a programme built around Schumann's late Geistervariationen (Ghost Variations) and the ways two contemporary composers respond to it. Michael Finnissy's RS Geistervariationen alludes to Schumann's work, while Cassandra Miller contributes Philip the Wanderer; at its centre sits the title work, Sinner, Don't Let This Harvest Pass, a rare co-composition by Finnissy and Miller based on a well-known Afro-American spiritual and born of their long friendship and correspondence. Transcription runs as a common thread through the album, each composer bringing a distinct approach to reworking existing material. The result is an inventive dialogue spanning two centuries of piano writing.
