York Bowen: 24 Preludes, Op. 102

Catalog Number: MEX_77149

Long overlooked, York Bowen – the 'English Rachmaninoff' – poured all the lyricism and virtuosity of his Russian counterpart into his 24 Preludes. South Korean pianist Sinae Lee makes an ardent case for this rarely heard romantic gem on Divine Art.

York Bowen: 24 Preludes, Op. 102
For Divine Art, South Korean pianist Sinae Lee records the 24 Preludes, Op. 102 by York Bowen (1884–1961), the virtuoso pianist-composer his contemporaries dubbed the 'English Rachmaninoff' and whom Saint-Saëns called 'the most remarkable of the young British composers'. Deeply rooted in romanticism even as that idiom fell from fashion after the First World War, Bowen poured his most emotional lyricism and formidable technical demands into a prolific output for the piano. Sinae Lee was captivated on first hearing Prelude No. 1, and after studying the complete set resolved to record this rarely performed music, convinced it deserves a far wider audience. The result is a passionate advocacy of a neglected corner of the British romantic repertoire.
