English Harpsichord Music
Catalog Number: M21209
George Malcolm, one of the most distinguished figures in English musical life during the 20th century, was born in 1917 and admitted to London’s Royal College of Music at the age of just eight. From 1947 to 1959, serving as Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral, Malcolm directed one of England’s most renowned boys' choirs, a group to which Benjamin Britten dedicated his Missa Brevis during that period.
From 1959 onwards, Malcolm focused exclusively on his career as a solo harpsichordist. Through his participation in the Edinburgh Festival, the Bath Festival, the Berlin Festival, and the Ansbach Bach Week, as well as his extensive concert activity abroad (including Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Scandinavia, Austria, Hungary, the USA, and the USSR), George Malcolm established himself among the foremost harpsichordists on the international stage. His interpretations have been preserved on numerous recordings (Decca, Columbia, HMV, L'Oiseau-Lyre, etc.). In January 1964, the Queen appointed George Malcolm a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). As a composer, he left behind a number of sacred and secular occasional works, including Variations on a Theme by Mozart for four harpsichords and a fugue in the style of Bach titled Bach Before the Mast. George Malcolm died in 1997.
