The Crossing, conducted by Donald Nally, is well known for its ethereal performances of newly-commissioned works. Their 42nd release, BESIEGED, proves to be a particularly experimental foray, both harmonically and thematically.
The album unites three contemporary composers whose choice of lyrical material could not have been any more different: apocalyptic short stories by contemporary American writer Lydia Davis, early 20th-century patient notes by the psychiatrist Dr. Alzheimer, and finally, astronomy-themed poems by Walt Whitman. Strikingly, the resulting music is utterly cohesive. The Crossing, with its usual laser-like expressive precision, carves out the common denominator: the unending mystery of human consciousness, and its very blurry bounds with the cosmos.
