Roots & Rivers
Catalog Number: NV6862
Roots & Rivers finds the Santa Fe Desert Chorale championing new American choral music, from Reena Esmail's Indian-inflected The Tipping Point to Shawn E. Okpebholo's sweeping American Road - a vibrant, multicultural celebration of contemporary commissioned works.
On Roots & Rivers, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale continues to expand the American choral repertoire through a wide-ranging selection of recent commissions. Reena Esmail's The Tipping Point weaves Indian classical music into a Western choral framework, charting a journey from darkness toward light. Jocelyn Hagen's bilingual Caminante reflects the multicultural character of Santa Fe itself, while Kile Smith's jazz-inflected Northland draws on the poetry of Claude McKay to explore the immigrant experience. The major work on the album is Shawn E. Okpebholo's The American Road, a six-movement suite that reimagines folk songs, hymns and spirituals through a contemporary lens. The programme closes with a specially crafted arrangement of Shawn Kirchner's Sweet Rivers, offered in gratitude for the wealth of new choral music being written in America today.
