This two-volume set documents John Williams' historic partnership with the United States Marine Band, 'The President's Own,' beginning with an invitation to guest-conduct the band's 205th anniversary concert at the Kennedy Center in 2003. Williams - whose own father had been a professional percussionist who instilled in him a lifelong respect for the Marine Band - returned to conduct the ensemble's 210th anniversary concert in 2008, and the two volumes here capture both occasions live. The programme ranges from The Star-Spangled Banner and stirring marches to signature Williams excerpts including the Cowboys Overture, music from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and the March from Superman. Newly commissioned arrangements by Hal Leonard's Paul Lavender and his team helped bring some of the most recognizable music in American film scoring into the concert band repertoire, several of which have since become standards.
