Carafa: Masaniello

Carafa: Masaniello
Michele Carafa (1785–1872), born into a Neapolitan noble family, studied with Cherubini and became one of Rossini's closest friends – a bond built on genuine mutual admiration. After settling in Paris he made his name at the Opéra-Comique, and it was there in 1827 that he presented Masaniello, ou Le Pêcheur napolitain, widely regarded as his finest work and staged just two months before Auber tackled the same story in La Muette de Portici. The opera retells the real uprising led by the fisherman Masaniello in Naples in 1647 – and, remarkably, Carafa was himself descended from figures who appear in it. Musically it is a well-paced historical drama that looks more to French operatic models than to Rossinian bel canto, putting dramatic momentum ahead of vocal display. This two-disc Naxos release brings a rarely heard score back into the light.
