Castelnuovo-Tedesco: Piano Quintets
Catalog Number: 8.574692
Two piano quintets reveal Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s lyrical craft—from the Romantic candour and contrapuntal bite of the early F major work to a warmly programmatic return to Tuscan hills, cypresses, processions, and harvest song.
Special Offer
Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s two piano quintets frame his chamber-music voice in sharply contrasting lights: the first (1931–32) is a confident, emotionally robust score, Romantic in impulse yet animated by vivid thematic interplay and deft counterpoint—lyric ideas set against fanfare-like rhythms, with a wistful Andante and a scherzo that can flicker from muscular energy to airy delicacy. The second (1951), written after his move to Los Angeles but rooted in “Memories of the Tuscan Countryside,” turns openly pictorial: a walking tune suggests the hills’ serene rhythm; the cypresses cast a solemn twilight; a Marian procession passes in chant-like phrases and distant “village band” colours; and the finale dances into an irresistible tarantella before calm returns, as if the landscape itself offers a quiet farewell. In the hands of Alessandro Marangoni and Quartetto Adorno, the music’s tenderness and colour speak with natural warmth and clarity, balancing rustic songfulness with polished ensemble poise.
