Cantata BWV 115 “Mache dich, mein Geist, bereit” (Get thyself, my soul, prepared) cannot be described as a bestseller and is popular only among the most ardent Bach enthusiasts. But why? Afterall, the cantata has everything to recommend itself: an impressive and complex introductory chorus, two arias that are hardly to be excelled in profundity, two highly expressive recitatives and a perfectly conceived closing chorale.
