Lipkis: Pierrot and Friends
Catalog Number: 8.559963
Larry Lipkis brings the stock characters of commedia dell'arte vividly to life in four concertos, each matched to an instrument that captures its personality: bassoon for Pierrot, violin for Columbina, flute for Innamorata, bass trombone for Harlequin.
Composer, performer and professor Larry Lipkis has produced more than 100 works, and his fascination with commedia dell'arte theatre inspired this vivid set of four concertos. Each concerto turns a stock character from the tradition into a musical portrait, pairing personality with instrument: the bassoon captures Pierrot's mischievous energy, the violin gives voice to Columbina's flirtatious charm, the flute traces Innamorata's tender lyricism, and the bass trombone embodies Harlequin's acrobatic wit. Rooted in Lipkis's own experience as a Renaissance-music performer, the writing balances theatrical colour with genuine formal craft. The result is a suite of character studies that is as entertaining as it is inventive, giving each soloist a chance to shine within a tightly drawn dramatic role.
