Virgile Barthe Guitar Recital
Catalog Number: 8.579192
Guitarist Virgile Barthe, winner of the 2025 Guitar Foundation of America Competition, journeys from Scarlatti and Buxtehude through Mendelssohn to Nicholas Maw and Bogdanovic's virtuoso Third Sonata – a recital of dazzling range and artistry.
Virgile Barthe, winner of the 2025 Guitar Foundation of America Competition, makes his recital debut with a programme spanning four centuries of music for guitar. He opens with arrangements of Domenico Scarlatti's deeply expressive keyboard sonatas and Buxtehude's brilliant Suite, before turning to the lyrical, song-like world of Mendelssohn's Songs without Words. Nicholas Maw's haunting Music of Memory brings a contemplative, late-twentieth-century voice to the programme. The recital culminates in Dusan Bogdanovic's virtuosic Third Sonata, which weaves quotations from Stravinsky together with influences from Balkan folk music, jazz and the Renaissance. Throughout, Barthe's playing combines technical brilliance with deep musical sensitivity.
