Konstantia Gourzi: Logos – Works for Orchestra

Konstantia Gourzi: Logos – Works for Orchestra
“Logos” means word – but also reason, thought, and the inner impulse to express and shape something. Under this multilayered concept, Konstantia Gourzi brings together on her album 'Logos' her first three orchestral works: 'Mykene' (2002), 'Gedichte zu Prometheus' [Poems to Prometheus] (2005), and 'Ostern in Konstantinopel – des Wortes wegen – 11 Momente zwischen Ost und West' [Easter in Constantinople – Because of the Word – 11 Moments Between East and West] (2009/10). Together, they trace the path of a composer whose music grows both from an intense engagement with her Greek heritage and from an ongoing dialogue with the cultural present. For Gourzi, tradition never appears as a historical quotation. Instead, it becomes living material that connects with new musical experiences. Characteristic of her writing is a dramaturgy built from short, concentrated sections: musical miniatures and snapshots that each open up their own sound world, yet combine to form larger, organically connected narratives. In 'Mykene', Gourzi’s first orchestral work, the archaic power of the ancient site becomes the starting point for seven aphoristically condensed sound images. History, myth, and personal memory overlap in shifting rhythmic and melodic layers. The four 'Gedichte zu Prometheus' take up the myth of humankind’s search for knowledge. Dance-like movement, cantabile lines, noise-like textures, and dramatic tutti gestures shape four contrasting musical states that enter into dialogue with one another. This dialogue opens out most expansively in 'Ostern in Konstantinopel'. Across eleven “moments,” East and West, past and present, orchestra and choir, Byzantine psalmody and a specially developed violin sound encounter one another. Inspired by Istanbul and its richly layered soundscape, Gourzi creates a musical bridge between different traditions without dissolving their individual identities. Logos thus makes audible a central idea in Gourzi’s work: music as a space of encounter. Different times, cultures, and forms of expression do not merely coexist, but enter into relationship with one another – sustained by the conviction that something new and unifying can emerge precisely from their diversity.
