Ansible
Catalog Number: FCR501
SPLICE Ensemble's Kirchoff, Vidiksis and Wells combine piano, drums, trumpet and electronics on works by Caroline Louise Miller, Steven Ricks and Elainie Lillios - collaborative explorations of time, distance and memory named for Le Guin's Ansible.
SPLICE Ensemble - Keith Kirchoff, Adam Vidiksis and Sam Wells on piano, drum set and trumpet, all combined with live electronics - built this album from a decade of deeply collaborative commissions exploring the theme of time. The title work, Caroline Louise Miller's Ansible, is named for Ursula K. Le Guin's instantaneous communication device and moves from ghostly, distant scrapes to frenetic, galaxy-sized climaxes. Steven Ricks' Motor Culture channels the thrill and dread of a road trip through three vivid movements, while Elainie Lillios' Living Between Seconds closes the album with field recordings of birds and insects woven into slowly shifting improvised textures. Across all three works, electroacoustic timbre becomes a vehicle for exploring memory, distance and the passage of time.
