No crown! - Baroque Music for Harp
Catalog Number: NO26010
What if Queen Christina of Sweden had played the harp? Margret Koell answers with an 'opera without words' for Baroque triple harp – a prologue, three acts and an epilogue built from music of Christina's world, from Froberger to Cesti and Rossi.
In 1654 Queen Christina of Sweden gave up her throne and, after a pivotal stay in Innsbruck, settled in Rome as one of the great patrons of the arts. Tyrolean harpist Margret Koell, inspired by a painting believed to show Christina at a triple harp, has shaped music from the queen's circle into a wordless drama with a prologue, three acts and an epilogue. Toccatas and canzonas by Froberger, a Buxtehude suite and anonymous pieces from the Chigi manuscript sit alongside opera arias by Cesti, Marazzoli, Rossi and Orazio Michi dell'Arpa – following the 17th-century practice of harpists performing arias as solo pieces. Koell plays an Italian triple harp modelled on the Barberini harp of 1632/33, and the album is complemented by Ariadne, a new work by José María Sánchez Verdú available digitally.
