No crown! - Baroque Music for Harp
Catalog Number: NO26110
When Queen Christina of Sweden gave up her crown in 1654, she became one of Rome's great patrons of music. Harpist Margret Koell turns the queen's favourite pieces – Froberger, Buxtehude, Cesti, Rossi and more – into an 'opera without words' for solo triple harp.
No crown! - Baroque Music for Harp
In 1654, Queen Christina of Sweden laid down her crown and devoted the rest of her life to the arts. Her journey took her via Innsbruck to Rome, where she became one of the leading patrons of music of her time and mingled with the city’s most prominent figures. Margret Koell steps into the queen’s circle and has put together a program of Christina’s favorite pieces from opera and chamber music. Here we encounter works by Froberger and Buxtehude, as well as arias from operas by Cesti, Marazzoli, Rossi and Pasquini. She has arranged this music into a dramatic narrative - effectively an opera without words, with various acts, interludes, an overture and a finale, performed as a solo on the triple harp. Margret Koell once again proves herself to be a leading specialist in the Baroque harp and, with her CD no crown!, brings her audience in an unconventional way very close to one of the most dazzling personalities of the 17th century - Christina of Sweden.
