Based on drawings transmitted across more than six centuries in Europe, these medieval keyboard instruments were reconstructed in Japan through a process of imagination and verification by master instrument makers. Many of these instruments are rarely seen today and are structurally delicate, making it difficult to preserve them in the same condition over long periods. This album documents a once-in-a-lifetime encounter in which six such instruments were brought together. Exploring a domain that has long stood quietly behind the history of medieval keyboard music, Marie Nishiyama vividly brings this forgotten sound world back to life. This attempt to illuminate lost sounds serves as a record of re-creation: a tangible exploration of a blank space in the history of keyboard music and an encounter with the sonic universe of the Middle Ages.
