Gabriel Fauré – Nocturnes
Performed by Michele Fazio
Within the vast landscape of piano music between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Nocturnes of Gabriel Fauré occupy a unique place. Written over a span of more than forty years, these thirteen pieces form something like an intimate diary of the French composer: a sequence of pages in which elegance, melancholy, and harmonic refinement gradually evolve, reflecting the transformation of his musical language over time.
The term “nocturne” inevitably recalls the tradition inaugurated by John Field and brought to poetic perfection by Frédéric Chopin. Yet Fauré transforms the genre into something profoundly personal. In his nocturnes we do not simply encounter night scenes or contemplative atmospheres; rather, we discover complex emotional states, often suspended between nostalgia and restlessness, shaped through an extraordinarily refined piano writing and a harmonic language that can be strikingly modern.
From the early nocturnes of the 1870s, still linked to a Romantic cantabile style, to the late masterpieces written when the composer was gradually losing his hearing, we perceive an extraordinary artistic journey. The melodic lines become increasingly essential, the modulations more daring, and the overall atmosphere more introspective. In the later nocturnes, the piano seems to speak with a restrained, almost meditative voice, inhabiting a sonic world that anticipates certain sensibilities of the twentieth century.
In this recording, the Italian pianist Michele Fazio approaches the cycle of the Nocturnes with particular attention to the narrative dimension of these works. His interpretation highlights the finesse of phrasing and the transparency of the piano textures, while at the same time revealing the emotional depth that runs throughout the entire cycle. The piano becomes a space of inner resonance, where every dynamic nuance and harmonic color contributes to shaping an intimate and contemplative musical journey.
Heard as a unified path, the Nocturnes reveal the portrait of a composer who, far from any virtuosic display, chooses the path of poetic concentration and expressive elegance. This is music that does not seek immediate effect, but rather invites the listener to a deeper, more attentive listening—one made of silences, breaths, and delicate chiaroscuro.
In these pages, the night is not merely a poetic image: it is a space of the soul. And in the dialogue between the piano and silence, Fauré’s music continues to reveal its quiet and timeless beauty.
