Liszt: Années de Pèlerinage III, S. 163
Catalog Number: OC24068B
The third book of Franz Liszt's "Années de pèlerinage" (Years of Pilgrimage) is subtitled "Troisième année" (Third Year) and was composed between 1867 and 1877. This book reflects Liszt's later years, marked by introspection, spiritual reflection, and a more austere, yet deeply emotional, musical language. Unlike the first two books, which were inspired by Liszt's travels in Switzerland and Italy, the third book is more personal and introspective, embodying Liszt's philosophical and religious contemplations.
The suite consists of seven pieces:
Aux cyprès de la Villa d'Este I: Thrénodie (At the Cypresses of the Villa d'Este I: Threnody) - This piece evokes the serene and somber atmosphere of the cypress trees at the Villa d'Este, where Liszt spent considerable time. The music is reflective and meditative, conveying a sense of mourning and introspection.
Aux cyprès de la Villa d'Este II: Thrénodie (At the Cypresses of the Villa d'Este II: Threnody) - A continuation of the first thrénodie, this piece further explores the themes of reflection and lamentation, deepening the emotional and spiritual atmosphere.
Les jeux d'eaux à la Villa d'Este (The Fountains of the Villa d'Este) - Inspired by the fountains at the Villa d'Este, this piece is one of Liszt's most famous late works. It is characterized by its shimmering, cascading arpeggios that depict the flowing water, creating a luminous and ethereal soundscape. The piece also reflects Liszt's fascination with water as a symbol of purity and renewal.
Sunt lacrymae rerum (There are tears for things) - The title is taken from Virgil's "Aeneid," and the piece is a profound meditation on the transient nature of human existence and the inherent sadness of life. It is somber and introspective, with a deep sense of resignation and acceptance.
Marche funèbre (Funeral March) - As the title suggests, this piece is a solemn and dignified funeral march, reflecting Liszt's preoccupation with mortality and the eternal. The music is powerful and stately, conveying a sense of finality and reverence.
Sursum corda (Lift Up Your Hearts) - This piece is a contrast to the preceding darker works, offering a sense of hope and spiritual uplift. It is serene and transcendent, capturing Liszt's deep religious faith and his belief in the possibility of spiritual elevation.
The "Troisième année" of "Années de pèlerinage" is distinct from the earlier books in its more introspective and spiritual nature. The music is less about external landscapes and more about internal, philosophical, and religious themes. Liszt's late style is characterized by its sparse textures, innovative harmonies, and profound emotional depth. This suite is a reflection of Liszt's inner life and his journey toward spiritual and existential understanding, making it a deeply moving and contemplative work in the piano repertoire.
