This collection brings together a selection of such works, revealing a more intimate portrait of the composer and the remarkable breadth of his musical imagination. Many of the pieces included here belong to the category of occasional music—works written for specific circumstances, social functions, or personal use. Marches and dance movements such as the Marsch in C major and the Marcia funebre in C minor reflect the ceremonial and theatrical contexts in which music often functioned during the late eighteenth century. Even in these relatively brief compositions, Mozart’s natural gift for melody and clarity of form is unmistakable. Several items in this program survive only as fragments or sketches. The Fragment eines Praeludiums in C major and the Fantasia in F major (Fragment) allow us to glimpse Mozart’s compositional process in its early stages. These incomplete pages reveal ideas captured in motion—moments of musical thought that suggest how effortlessly Mozart’s imagination could generate new themes and harmonic directions. A particularly intriguing work in this collection is the Suite in C major, K. 399, a composition that reflects Mozart’s interest in earlier musical traditions. Modeled on the Baroque dance suite, its movements—Ouverture, Allemande, Courante, and Sarabande—evoke the stylistic world of composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel, while remaining firmly rooted in Mozart’s own Classical language. In this recording, the Sarabande, left incomplete in the surviving manuscript, has been completed by pianist Giuseppe Bruno in a manner intended to respect Mozart’s stylistic framework. Other works demonstrate Mozart’s engagement with unusual instrumental contexts. The Andante in F major, K. 616, originally composed for mechanical organ (Orgelwalze), and the Adagio in C major, K. 356, written for the ethereal sound of the glass harmonica, reveal Mozart’s curiosity for diverse timbres and musical environments. Transcribed for the piano, these works acquire a new expressive dimension while preserving their lyrical and contemplative character.
