Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – The London Sketchbook & Early Works
Giuseppe Bruno, piano
Among the many extraordinary chapters in the early life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the period he spent in London between 1764 and 1765 holds a special fascination. During this journey—part of the extended European tour undertaken with his father Leopold—the young Mozart, still a child, encountered new musical influences that would leave a lasting imprint on his developing style. It was during this stay that the remarkable document known today as The London Sketchbook came into being.
The London Sketchbook is a small manuscript notebook containing short keyboard pieces, musical sketches, and compositional exercises written by Mozart when he was around eight years old. These miniatures reveal a young mind already absorbing the language of the Classical style: clear melodic lines, balanced phrases, and elegant harmonic progressions. At the same time, they offer a rare glimpse into Mozart’s creative workshop at an age when most composers are only beginning their musical education.
London was also the place where Mozart met Johann Christian Bach, the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach and one of the most influential composers active in England at the time. The music of Johann Christian Bach—with its clarity, grace, and melodic immediacy—deeply impressed the young Mozart. The stylistic echoes of this encounter can be heard throughout the pieces contained in the Sketchbook and in other early keyboard works written during this formative period.
Although brief in length, the pieces in The London Sketchbook display remarkable musical intuition. Many of them take the form of simple minuets or short keyboard movements, yet within their modest dimensions one can already sense Mozart’s natural gift for melody and proportion. The early works presented alongside the Sketchbook expand this portrait, showing how rapidly the young composer’s musical language evolved during his childhood years.
In this recording, pianist Giuseppe Bruno approaches these early pages not merely as historical curiosities, but as living music. His interpretation highlights their freshness, clarity, and youthful vitality, allowing the listener to experience the charm and inventiveness that characterize Mozart’s earliest keyboard writing. The piano becomes a vehicle through which these miniature forms reveal their elegance and expressive spontaneity.
Listening to these works today offers a rare opportunity to witness the beginnings of one of the greatest musical minds in history. In their simplicity and grace, the pieces of The London Sketchbook remind us that even in childhood, Mozart possessed an instinctive understanding of musical beauty—an understanding that would soon blossom into the masterpieces that define the Classical era.
