Jukka-Pekka Saraste has lived with Sibelius's seven symphonies throughout his conducting career – it was the Fourth that first drew him from violin playing to the podium. This three-disc set presents his second complete cycle, recorded live at the Helsinki Music Centre in 2024–26, with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra: the very ensemble that premiered all seven works under the composer's own baton. The recordings form part of the SIBELIUS & SARASTE project, marking Sibelius's 160th birthday with audiovisual documentation for STAGE+ and Arte Concert. Saraste's readings are shaped by rare insider knowledge, including tempo instructions passed down from Sibelius himself, and by a conviction that the symphonies' 'compulsive drive' must carry the listener from the first note to the last.
