Colin Matthews: Seascapes
Colin Matthews (b.1946) has long been among the most eloquent voices in British music for the song with instrumental ensemble. Seascapes (2019/20) sets five poems by the wartime poet Sidney Keyes. As Time Returns (2017/18) draws on the fragmented, haunting texts of Czech poet Ivan Blatný. The Island (2007) sets three Rilke poems — the island, the farms, the star — with characteristic depth of atmosphere. A Land of Rain (2016/17) uses texts by Nicholas Moore, himself drawing on Baudelaire. Together the four cycles demonstrate Matthews's exceptional skill in word-setting and his ability to create rich, varied instrumental worlds in service of the voice.
