Mahler: Symphony No. 2 in C Minor "Resurrection"
Catalog Number: DONY4280
Sir Donald Runnicles and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra capture the overwhelming power of Mahler's 'Resurrection' Symphony in a live performance from Edinburgh's Usher Hall – a journey from funeral march to blazing affirmation.
Mahler: Symphony No. 2 in C Minor "Resurrection"
Mahler spent six years on his Second Symphony, which began life in 1888 as the symphonic poem Totenfeier and was completed in 1894. The opening funeral march mourns the hero of the First Symphony; the following movements recall episodes of his life, including a setting from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, before the vast finale sets Klopstock's resurrection ode, with lines added by Mahler himself, culminating in a glorious blaze of soloists, chorus, orchestra and organ. This performance by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Sir Donald Runnicles was recorded live at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh on 1 March 2026.
